The Altra Yorkshire Marathon starts at the University of York. It runs out of the city into the countryside through Stockton-on-the-Forest and past Buttercrambe Moor Wood. It then circles round to Balloon Tree Farm and loops back to finish at the University campus.

The next race is on Sunday 17 October 2027. The 2026 race was run on Sunday 18 October. The details below are the 2026 edition's until the 2027 pages go up. The Altra Yorkshire 10 Mile runs the same morning, starting at 10:15.

The organiser's page showed an Enter Event button on 5 October. It does not say whether places remain, so check before you travel.

Getting to York 2026 details

There is no event parking at the University of York or near it, and the university car park is for Blue Badge holders only. If you drive, use the York Pullman park and ride from Elvington Airfield, Askham Bar or Grimston Bar. The magazine says the sites open at 6:00, and the last bus leaves the Event Village at 17:00. The organiser says to book in advance, because capacity is limited and the early slots are best.

From York railway station, a shuttle service goes direct to the Event Village. The organiser's page says it starts at 7:00 from Stand J, with priority for runners before 8:30. The magazine says shuttles from the park and ride sites and the station begin at 6:30. Check the final instructions for the time. Shuttle tickets are bought on the day.

The organiser says York is about two hours by train from London, and that Edinburgh is around two and a half hours away. There are also direct trains from Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and the South West. It suggests allowing about an hour on the morning to collect your number, if you need to, and spend time in the village before you walk to the start. The nearest airport is Leeds Bradford, less than 30 miles away.

Where to stay in York

The start, the race village and the finish are all at the University of York, and the organiser says there is no event parking there. A room in the city keeps you on the shuttle from the railway station. A room near one of the three park and ride sites avoids the city centre, but then you depend on the bus times.

Collecting your number 2026 details

UK entries are posted a race number. If you registered after 28 September, or your number does not arrive, the organiser says to collect it from the Race Office in the Event Village.

The Race Office is open on Saturday 17 October from 12:00 to 16:00 and on Sunday 18 October from 7:00. The page gives no Sunday closing time. The organiser strongly advises collecting in advance to avoid queues.

Numbers are not posted to a postal address outside the UK. If you also have a UK address, the organiser asks you to email [email protected]. Otherwise collect on the event weekend. Do not let anyone else run under your number, because that leads to disqualification.

Race morning 2026 details

The marathon mass start is at 9:30 and the wheelchair start at 9:25. The assembly zones open at 8:30 for marathon runners only, and the warm up begins at 9:15. The event is self-penning, so your number shows no zone. Line up near the timing flag that matches your expected finish time.

The race village is at the University of York. The organiser's web page puts the Event Village on Campus West and the baggage store on Campus South. The magazine places the Race Office on Campus West in one section, and puts the Race Office and baggage store together in Campus South in its event timings. Read the campus in the final instructions before race day.

The baggage store opens at 7:00. You can leave one bag, up to 55 × 45 cm, and collect it from the same place after the race. Tear the label off your number and attach it to the bag. The organiser does not accept suitcases or bike helmets and may run random security checks. Clothing left at the start is collected and given to charity, unless you leave it at the baggage store.

Pacers run with finish-time flags, and a back marker paces a seven-hour finish. The organiser asks runners to use the designated toilets only, and to wear bone-conducting headphones if they use any.

The course 2026 details

The route leaves the university, runs through the city and out into the countryside. The organiser names Stockton-on-the-Forest, Buttercrambe Moor Wood and Balloon Tree Farm along the way, and the route ends back at the University campus. The organiser publishes a static map, an interactive map and a gradient map. It gives no total climb figure on the page.

There are eight water stations on the marathon course, with 330 ml bottles of water. Applied Nutrition stations hand out energy gels and isotonic drink. The organiser puts the exact places on the route map, so check it before you plan gels. First aid is near the water stations and at the finish.

The magazine expects the marathon winner at about 11:50 and the last finisher at about 16:45. It does not give a time limit.

Go back to the baggage store to collect your bag as soon as you can after the finish. The organiser has a first aid and recovery unit near the finish line. Sano Physiotherapy York offers post-race massage in the Event Village. The village has food and drink stalls, and the partner charities are there too.

Agree a meeting point in the village before the race. The last park and ride bus leaves the village at 17:00.
