Hamburg starts and finishes beside the exhibition halls at Hamburg Messe. You run past the harbour, circle the Alster's neighbourhoods and return through Eppendorf. The organiser describes the course as almost flat.
The 41st race is on Sunday 25 April 2027. All 20,000 marathon entries are sold out, according to the organiser's 2 October announcement. Numbers can only change hands through the official transfer, which the original holder starts in their account or through Manage Registration.
The 2027 participant page already gives collection hours and start blocks. Its linked course map and GPX are still labelled 2026, so the course description and spectator kilometres below are for that edition.

Getting to Hamburg
The airport's S1 train reaches Hamburg Hauptbahnhof in about 25 minutes and runs every 10 minutes. The airport station is accessible from Terminals 1 and 2. At Ohlsdorf, you can change to the U1.
For Hamburg Messe, the organiser names Sternschanze, Messehallen on the U2 and Stephansplatz on the U1. Regional trains also stop at Dammtor. Check which entrance serves your start block before choosing the last part of the trip.
The organiser advises public transport because parking around Hamburg Messe is scarce and roads close for the race. A room on a rail or underground line is more useful on Sunday than a parking space near the course.
Where to stay in Hamburg
Staying near Hamburg Messe keeps the expo, start and finish in the same area. You collect in Hall A3, drop your bag in Hall B6 and finish on Karolinenstraße. Check the walk to the correct hall entrance when choosing your room.
A room near Hauptbahnhof gives you a direct airport train and a separate trip to the race. Dammtor, Sternschanze and Messehallen are other places to compare. The organiser gives no walking times from those stations to the individual start blocks.
Collecting your number 2027 details
Collect at the Marathon Hamburg Expo in Hall A3, Messeplatz 1, 20357 Hamburg. Bring photo ID and your registration confirmation. Friday collection runs from 12:00 to 19:00, and Saturday from 9:00 to 19:00.
A friend or family member can collect for you using the authorisation form sent with your official confirmation. Arrange that before the expo trip, so they have the right documents.
Sunday collection is possible only with an advance booking through your account or Manage Registration. It costs €10, and collection is guaranteed only during the booked slot. Do not arrive on race morning expecting an unbooked collection desk.
Race morning 2027 details
Blocks A–L use Karolinenstraße and start between 8:30 and about 9:00. Blocks M–Q use Bei den Kirchhöfen and start between 9:00 and about 9:15. Assembly opens from 7:30 and 8:00 respectively. The organiser marks those times as subject to change.
Your expected finish time determines your block. Read the confirmation for your own allocation and use the matching start-area map. Both starts belong to the marathon, so finding a crowd of runners is not enough to tell you which entrance to use.
Use the official kitbag from collection, with your number sticker attached. Hall B6 accepts bags from 7:00. Keep your race number for collection, which closes at 16:00. Changing rooms and showers are also in Hall B6.
The marathon closes six hours after the last runner crosses the start. Toilets are available around the start and finish, in the Athletes Area and at kilometre markers along the course.
The course 2026 details
The route leaves Hamburg Messe towards the Reeperbahn and the Elbe. It passes the fish market and St. Pauli Landungsbrücken, then runs through the Wallring Tunnel towards Ballindamm and Jungfernstieg.
After Kennedybrücke, the course follows the eastern side of the Außenalster and heads towards Stadtpark and City Nord. Ohlsdorf is the northern end of the route. From Maienweg, the remaining 12 km take you back towards the centre.
You return through Eppendorf and along Harvestehuder Weg, then pass Dammtor and Planten un Blomen before finishing on Karolinenstraße. The organiser publishes a 2026 map and its own downloadable GPX.
Measured from the organiser's 2026 GPX, the route has about 134 m of climb. That is our calculation, not an organiser-published figure.
Drinks stations 2027 details
The 2027 refreshment instructions put the main stations on the right every 5 km. They have electrolyte drink and water in cups, with bananas from 10 km, gels from 20 km and cola from 25 km. Check the map for intermediate water points before setting your gel times.
