Vienna City Marathon 2027

Sunday, 18 April 2027 · Vienna, Austria

Across 42.2 km the Vienna City Marathon climbs about 90 m in total, between 158 m and 203 m above sea level, and nearly all of it comes so slowly you won't notice. You cross the Danube in the first two kilometres, loop through the Prater, run the Ring and out to Schönbrunn, and finish on Rathausplatz in front of City Hall.

Vienna is a short flight from most of Europe. The train from the airport reaches the main station in 15 to 20 minutes and the U1 takes you on to the start. You don't buy a ticket on the day, because your race number is one.

The weather is the one thing to think about. The last five race mornings ran from 1 °C to about 15 °C at the gun.

The weekend at a glance

The 44th Vienna City Marathon starts at 9:00 on Wagramer Straße, beside the UN buildings on the far side of the Danube, and finishes on Rathausplatz in front of City Hall. Entries for the marathon closed on 20 September 2026. The organisers are considering moving the half marathon to another day in 2027, so the start details below, which are 2026's, may change when the 2027 pages go up in the spring.

Getting to Vienna

Vienna International Airport is the way in for most runners. Take the Railjet or the REX 7 to Hauptbahnhof, which takes 15 to 20 minutes. London to Vienna takes a little over two hours in the air, and plenty of other capitals are closer.

Until 31 October 2027 the S-Bahn between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed for rebuilding. The S7 from the airport stops at St. Marx, short of the centre, and the City Airport Train runs as a bus to Wien Mitte, taking 21 minutes and leaving every 12 to 15. The Railjet is not affected, and Hauptbahnhof is on the U1, the line to the start, nine stops from Kaisermühlen-VIC without a change.

Where to stay in Vienna

The U1 runs to the start. The finish at Rathausplatz is served by the U2 and a short walk from the U1, and it sits in the centre while the start does not, which is why the centre is the easiest place to sleep.

Collecting your number 2026 details

Numbers are handed out at the Marx Halle, Karl-Farkas-Gasse 19, in the 3rd district, on the Friday and Saturday before the race. In 2026 the hours were 9:00 to 19:00 on Friday and 9:00 to 18:00 on Saturday, and the organisers asked anyone already in Vienna on Friday to come then and keep Saturday's queues down.

Bring the Check-In Pass they email you and photo ID. Someone else can collect your number with your pass, their own ID and the signed power of attorney form from the organiser's site. Your block letter and its colour are printed on the front of the number, and the block cannot be changed at the expo.

Race morning 2026 details

The right station depends on your block, and on whether you're dropping a bag. With a bag to drop, or in block E or F, get off at Alte Donau, because the bag trucks stand at the back of the start. Without a bag, blocks A to D use Kaisermühlen-VIC, and for blocks B and D the Donau-City-Straße exit takes you through an underpass to your block. Every block is entered from the back, and there are toilets inside the blocks.

The U1 runs every two and a half minutes on race morning instead of every five. When the platforms fill, trains run through Donauinsel, Kaisermühlen-VIC and Alte Donau without stopping, so allow time to come back a stop.

This is one morning worked back from the gun, for block D (9:19 in 2026) with a bag, staying near Stephansplatz. The app works yours out from your own block, hotel and breakfast.

The race crosses the Danube in the first two kilometres and reaches the Prater by 4 km. Most of its 90 m of climb is in two places. From about 9 km, round the Ring, out along the Linke Wienzeile to Schönbrunn and back up Mariahilfer Straße, the road rises about 44 m over 9 km, too gradually to see. You get most of it back between 19 and 23 km as the course drops towards the centre.

The half marathon turns right into Bellariastraße at 20.3 km, and the marathon keeps left through the blue arch. From 24 km the course is flat, along the Danube Canal and round the Prater, much of it on the long, straight Hauptallee, to about 36 km. The last 3 km, along the Ring to Rathausplatz, rise about 17 m, the only climb in the second half.

There is something to drink from 3.9 km to 40.8 km, never more than 3.7 km apart, with water in cups, Powerade, Coca-Cola and bananas. In 2026 a gel was handed out at 33.5 km. There are 15 more water points along the route, some of them taps where you can fill a bottle, and toilets beside the drinks stations about every 5 km.

Weather in Vienna in April

The usual high in Vienna that week is about 16 °C, but race mornings have varied far more than that suggests. These are the last five race days at the start, at the gun and at 13:00.

Race day9:0013:00Wind at 9:00
24 April 202214.6 °C19.9 °C17 km/h

6 April 20251.1 °C3.1 °C23 km/h
19 April 202614.0 °C21.6 °C2 km/h

Pack for a morning near freezing and for an afternoon above 20 °C. The 2025 race was about two weeks earlier than usual, which explains some of its cold, but 2024's was on the usual weekend and started at 5 °C.

Afterwards

The bag trucks drive to the finish, so your bag is waiting at Rathausplatz. Your number is still a ticket for six hours after your block's start, so the U2 from Rathaus or Schottentor gets you back to the U1 without buying one.
