Rome Marathon 2027

Sunday, 14 March 2027 · Rome, Italy

You set off from Via dei Fori Imperiali with the Colosseum behind you, and 42.195 km later you run into the Circus Maximus. The Vatican is in the middle, and so are the Tiber and a lot of tourists who have stopped to watch.

The ground is flat, between 8.1 m and 31 m above sea level. The catch is underfoot, with about 6 km of the route on cobblestones, so shoes with a bit of cushioning make sense.

In March the mornings are cool and the afternoons can be warm.

Getting to Rome

Most people land at Fiumicino and take the Leonardo Express to Termini. It's non-stop, takes 32 minutes and leaves about every 15 minutes, less often early and late, according to Trenitalia. From Termini, Metro B reaches Colosseo and Circo Massimo in a few stops.

The Expo Village is 50 metres from the Circo Massimo stop, so you can get off the train and walk in.

Where to stay in Rome

The start and finish are both in the middle of the old city, a few hundred metres apart, so the useful question is how far you are from either. Staying near the Colosseum puts the start in walking distance. Staying near Termini puts Metro B between you and the expo.

Partner hotels near the departure are listed on the organiser's site.

Collecting your number 2026 details

In 2026 the Expo Village was open Thursday 19 and Friday 20 March from 9:00 to 20:00, and Saturday 21 March from 9:00 to 18:00. The 2027 hours aren't published. Numbers aren't handed out on race day.

Bring the confirmation email you receive a few days before the race, shown on a phone or printed, and photo ID. Someone else can collect for you with a copy of your ID, your confirmation letter and a signed authorisation from you. These are the 2026 arrangements.

Race morning 2026 details

Your meeting time and wave access are in the race information sent days before. In 2026 that put the first runners through at 8:10 and the last at 9:00. If you're late you start at the back. Volunteers check your number on the way into the wave.

Bag deposit is the backpack from your race pack and nothing else. Put the sticker with your number on its clear window. Pack only clothes for after the race, and no valuables, because the organisation accepts no responsibility for them.

The course

You start by the Colosseum and loop past Piazza Venezia, the Palatino and Circo Massimo. Then comes the long run out to Basilica di San Paolo and the Pyramid of Cestius, and back along the Tiber past the Tiber Island. Castel Sant'Angelo leads onto Via della Conciliazione and St Peter's. The route goes north to Foro Italico and across Ponte Milvio, then through the middle of the city again. The last 2 km pass the Vittoriano and the Bocca della Verità before you finish inside Circo Massimo.

The only elevation figures are the lowest and highest points, 8.1 m and 31 m, and no total climb is published.

Water, food and sponges are at stops listed in the race information. If you drop out, a shuttle collects you at about km 20.6, 28.3 and 32.8 and takes you to the finish area.

Weather in Rome in March

At the end of March the average in Rome is about 13 °C, and about 9 °C at the start, the organiser says. These are the last five race days at the Colosseum, at 8:00, which is the 2026 start, and at 13:00.

16 March 20259.8 °C14.2 °C8 km/h
22 March 20268.7 °C13.4 °C7 km/h

Mornings were cool every year, and the afternoon reached 22 °C in 2022. A layer you can throw away at the start line is worth more than one you keep.

Afterwards

At the finish you get your medal, final refreshments, the toilets and the bag deposit. Collect your backpack by showing your number. Results and live times are on the organiser's site.
